Nutrition & Feeding

Crested geckos are one of the easiest reptiles to feed, thanks to modern meal replacement powders (MRPs) that supply a complete, balanced diet. Understanding their nutritional needs ensures a long, vibrant life.

Meal Replacement Powders

Commercial MRPs are the foundation of a healthy crested gecko diet. Two industry-leading brands dominate:

  • Pangea Fruit Mix — highly palatable, excellent calcium-to-phosphorus ratio
  • Repashy Crested Gecko Diet — a pioneer in the hobby, widely trusted

Mix MRP with water to a ketchup-like consistency. Offer fresh MRP every 2–3 days, removing uneaten portions within 24–36 hours to prevent spoilage.

Feeding Schedule

  • Juveniles: Every other day
  • Sub-adults and adults: 2–3 times per week
  • Breeding females: Every 2 days to support egg production

Live Insects

Supplementing with live insects provides enrichment and additional protein:

  • Crickets (gut-loaded, 2× per week for juveniles)
  • Dubia roaches (an excellent staple feeder)
  • Black soldier fly larvae (Repti Worms/Phoenix Worms) — naturally high in calcium

Always dust insects with a calcium + D3 supplement at every feeding for juveniles, and every other feeding for adults.

Fruit Treats

Ripe fruit purees can be offered as an occasional treat (no more than once per week):

  • Mango, papaya, fig, and banana are well tolerated
  • Avoid citrus, avocado, and high-oxalate fruits

Hydration

Lightly misting the enclosure each evening provides drinking water on glass and leaves. A small, shallow water dish can also be kept at the bottom of the enclosure as a backup source.

Fresh, clean water is essential — never allow standing water to sit for more than 2 days.

Supplements

Beyond dusting feeders, a well-formulated MRP covers most nutritional needs. If feeding MRP exclusively:

  • Calcium without D3 dusted on insects 2× per week
  • Multivitamin once every 2 weeks
