The Perfect Enclosure

"Un chez-soi bien aménagé est la première promesse d'un gecko épanoui."

The Perfect Enclosure

Creating the right environment is the single most important thing you can do for your crested gecko's long-term health and happiness. Thankfully, cresties are forgiving companions — but they still have clear preferences worth honoring.

Enclosure Size

Adult crested geckos thrive in tall, vertically oriented enclosures. A single adult requires a minimum of 40 gallons (typically an 18" × 18" × 36" front-opening terrarium). Bigger is always better — more vertical height means more climbing enrichment.

  • Juveniles (under 6 months): 12" × 12" × 18"
  • Sub-adults (6–12 months): 18" × 18" × 24"
  • Adults: 18" × 18" × 36" or larger

Temperature & Humidity

Crested geckos are cool-to-moderate temperature animals. They do not require a heat lamp in most home environments.

  • Daytime temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C)
  • Night-time temperature: Can drop to 65°F (18°C) safely
  • Humidity: 60–80%, with a daily dry-out period to prevent respiratory issues

Mist one side of the enclosure each evening and allow it to partially dry before the next misting.

Avoiding Overheating

Temperatures above 85°F (29°C) are dangerous and can be fatal. Keep enclosures away from direct sunlight and heat vents.

Substrate

A naturalistic bioactive substrate works well and holds humidity beautifully:

  • Coconut fiber mixed with organic topsoil
  • Ready-made bioactive mixes (e.g., Josh's Frogs BioBedding)
  • Paper towels for quarantine or juveniles

Lighting

Crested geckos are crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk). A low-output UVB bulb (5.0) on a 12-hour cycle supports bone health, though it is not strictly required if dietary calcium is adequate. A simple day/night cycle helps regulate their natural rhythms.

Furnishings

Add plenty of climbing opportunities and hiding spots:

  • Cork bark rounds and flats for hides and climbing
  • Sturdy live or artificial plants (Pothos, Ficus, Bromeliads)
  • Horizontal branches at mid and upper levels
  • A water dish at the bottom for supplemental hydration
